"Scanne Dias"

A friend from the San Diego dSLR club was kind enough to loan me her DA35 Macro so that I could try out the idea of "scanning" old slides with my K20D. My goal was to have files suitable for display on my SmugMug site. I'm not concerned with getting enough resolution to print from; if I want prints I have the slides themselves. A dedicated slide scanner that would work with my Mac was looking expensive, and very time consuming. Being my usual impatient self I hastily rigged up a clumsy way to position the camera over a probably 25-year old light box, which I had masked with black paper. I really need a copy stand to do this right, the camera was not square or level to the slide on the lightbox, but these first few shots were really just to see if it would work. Here is the set up.I shot jpgs (on the second to highest setting), using matrix metering and aperture priority at f/6.3. I used auto-focus, and for the first time since I've had the camera, used the multiple focus point setting. White balance was set to AWB. I also used the 2-sec delay for the mirror lock-up. Images were imported to iPhoto where I did a bit of cropping and straightening to get rid of the edges of the slide frames that occasionally showed up, but no other processing. A copy stand would help get the entire frame in the future. The images were exported from iPhoto as max 1,500 pixel files, then uploaded to SmugMug.
This first shot was taken in June of 1980 at Xlendi Bay, on the island of Gozo, Malta, with a Pentax MX and SMCP-M 200 f/4.0, handheld, on Kodachrome.
